Dark Bottom Star

How does that grab you? Nymphaea 'Alaska' hardy waterlily.
When I was attending Oklahoma State University our faculty would often bring in guest speakers on a wide variety of subjects. One speaker was a well known Oklahoma City Landscape Architect: Tommy Roberts. If my memory serves me correctly (this was in 1978), Mr. Roberts had a few trademarks he generally used in all his designs. The one trademark I remember the most was that all his pools were designed with dark bottoms. This created much visual depth and surface reflection. Night lighting was exceptional. The image above was taken over my stock tank pool which I painted black before installation.

  2. Well, it stands out. I'm interested in the stock tank. How big and how deep? Do you have a pump running or is the pond stagnant?

    1. Stock tank is 5.5'. It does have a pump, which is self contained in a filter box with an outlet attached 1/2" hose. The hose exits though an old cistern bucket pump spout. There is a bypass from the outlet which bubbles in the tank. Have. A large goldfish, mosquito fish(Gambusa) and oxygenating vegetation.

  3. Gorgeous. I miss my water lillies. The Koi ate them. Can't have everything.

  4. I like it! There's just something about Water Lilies. Ours have been blooming all summer--I hope to get one more before the summer ends. Yours is gorgeous--especially the white on black.

  5. I agree on the dark bottom thing. We have a dark bottom pool. It would just have looked wrong for it to be California blue water. What did you paint your tank with. We had some left over sealant which I suggested D seal the tank with. That was a big mistake. It turned grey when water was added. I had to remove it. The lily is stunning. I have a native one too but it is yellow. Things are looking rather crowded in my tank these days.

  6. Beautiful! It does seem like it was floating on a deep river instead of a stock tank.

  7. Great idea with the dark pool bottom. Very impressive. Maybe I should do that to the lake outside my windows!! Thanks for the idea.
